They reached out to us with a vision: to give their two-story brick home a fresh, modern facelift without losing the charm that made it feel like home.
The transformation that followed wasn’t just about residential paint.
It was about preparation, precision, and working with the elements—both architectural and environmental—to deliver a finish that would stand up to time, weather, and admiration from every passerby.
Painting Over Brick—Done the Right Way
A Home with Character, Ready for a Refresh
The house had beautiful bones: dormer windows, a prominent chimney, and a three-car garage that gave the facade structure and depth. But the original red brick had weathered over time, dulling the home’s curb appeal.
The homeowners were drawn to the look of painted brick—clean, bright, and contemporary—but knew it would take expertise to do it properly.
Prepping for Success in Baltimore’s Climate
One of the first challenges we encountered was the brick itself.
It was textured and porous, meaning it had to be thoroughly cleaned and allowed to dry completely before any paint could be applied.
In Baltimore, MD’s climate—humid in the summer, with sudden storms and lingering moisture—timing was everything. We waited for a dry window in the forecast to ensure optimal adhesion and curing.
Once the surface was clean and dry, we turned our attention to the detail work.
Cracked mortar joints were repointed, any loose brick was repaired, and we carefully masked off all trim, windows, and garage doors. That prep work, often overlooked, is what allows the final finish to last.
The Right Products for Painted Brick
With the house ready for paint, we started with a breathable masonry primer.
This step is critical. It allows moisture to escape while sealing the surface for even coverage. Using a standard exterior paint might have looked okay at first, but it wouldn’t have held up against Maryland’s seasonal shifts.
Then came the main color: white for the brick. Bright enough to modernize, but not so stark that it clashed with the natural tones of the surrounding woods.
For contrast, we chose soft, complementary colors for the trim, garage doors, and window frames. The effect was subtle but intentional, pulling the eye toward the home’s best features.
A Chimney That Anchors the Design
The tall chimney, in particular, became a striking centerpiece once painted.
Its vertical reach, now highlighted in clean white, added visual interest and broke up the horizontal expanse of the facade. The dormers and garage bays followed suit, bringing balance and symmetry to the new look.
What started as an aging brick exterior had become a bright, cohesive, and polished presentation.
A Transformation That Fits Its Surroundings
When we wrapped the project, the result was more than just a paint job. It was a transformation. The freshly painted white brick gave the home a crisp, updated appearance without making it feel out of place in its wooded neighborhood.
The subtle trim work added depth and style without overwhelming the senses.
Even more satisfying? The homeowner’s reaction.
The property now turns heads for all the right reasons. What was once a house that blended quietly into the trees now stands out with intention, but still complements the landscape.
It’s the kind of transformation that adds both beauty and value, and one we’re proud to put our name on.
